What is Direct Primary Care?

Direct Primary Care (DPC) is a healthcare model that puts the focus back on you—the patient. Instead of billing insurance for every visit or procedure, DPC works on a simple monthly membership fee. This gets you direct access to your doctor whenever you need care with no charges for individual visits, no copays, no surprise bills, and no insurance middlemen.

At Abide Health, your membership covers unlimited office visits, extended appointment times, same- or next-day scheduling, and direct communication with Dr. Kuster by phone call, text, or email. Many in-office procedures are included as well.

We can partner together to prevent illness, manage chronic conditions like high blood pressure, heart disease, or diabetes, and support your well-being over time - all for about the cost of your monthly phone bill.

The comfort of small town family medicine, the convenience of same day in person or virtual visits, and a trusting relationship with your doctor--Abide Health is built with you in mind.

Dr. Shaw Kuster

Hello, and welcome to Abide Health!

My dream has always been to practice broad scope family medicine - caring for infants, pregnant people, seniors, and everyone in between. This dream is what brought my family of three children, our dog Nelson, and a very supportive husband, to Louisville, Colorado. After a stint in private practice, I found myself and my patients increasingly frustrated by the constraints that health insurance places on the physician-patient relationship.

Then I found DPC - a healthcare movement that is relatively new but growing. DPC is healthcare that is good for patients and good for doctors. My goal is for Abide Health to be a place of community where patients feel at home, and where real healthcare is accessible, affordable, and stress free.

I am a board certified family medicine physician. I completed medical school at UTMB Galveston, family medicine residency at Baylor Scott and White, and a one year fellowship in advanced and surgical obstetrics at St Elizabeth’s in northern Kentucky. I look forward to partnering with you and your family in your health journey!

A bit about me--I love gardening, taking my kids out on "Mama dates", playing percussion in the Boulder Concert Band, and discovering new places in and around Louisville, Colorado.

 FAQs

  • In short, we do not accept or bill any health insurance. We can see patients with most types of health insurance and we encourage you to keep insurance in case specialist or hospital care is needed.

We cannot currently accept patients with Medicare or who are Medicare eligible. If you have Medicare and are interested in becoming a member please fill out the contact form below and we will notify you when this becomes available.

Due to Colorado law we are unable to accept any patient that has Medicaid.

  • As a board-certified family medicine physician Dr Kuster is trained to care for patients of all ages.

Due to government regulations we are currently unable to accept patients who are 65 or older and Medicare eligible. If this applies to you and you are interested in becoming a member then please complete the contact form below to be placed on a waitlist for Medicare patients.

  • Health insurance is great when you need it, but using your health insurance for primary and preventive care is a bit like using your car insurance for routine oil changes; it might cost you more than it’s worth. Not only does the monthly membership fee with Abide Health help keep health care costs predictable, but with easy access to regular care you may be able to avoid costly specialist care or urgent/emergency care and hospital visits. A year of Abide Health membership is often less expensive than a single urgent care visit.
